About the Artist
Eleni Spandagos was born and raised on the
island of Crete, Greece, where she grew up surrounded by
Byzantine churches. The
icons and frescoes in those churches inspired her to paint at a young age, and
she has been a painter ever since.
In recent years, she has returned to
iconography, her original interest, and was fortunate to study under the
renowned iconographer Ksenia M. Pokrovsky.
She now focuses her talents and energy exclusively on creating icons in the
traditional Byzantine method.
Each icon is an original work of art,
painstakingly created using egg tempera and gold leaf on a wood base.
Her icons are installed at numerous Orthodox churches
in the United States and Greece, and have been purchased by private
collectors throughout the States. They have also been featured in
several national publications.
